 This shows the interior of my homebuilt regenerative radio.

9 volt battery runs the radio, D cells run the amplifier.

The reason it gets such good reception with only one transistor is that after amplifying a distant, weak signal, it feeds that amplified signal back into the antenna input section, amplifying it again, and again, and again, ad infinitum.
